The Brooke Papers
Concerning the Papers
The Brooke Papers are monthly dispatches from Brooke Hall. These are short letters on the Edwardian way of life, sent out under seal on the first of every month.
Each Paper takes up a small aspect of how the world once worked: how one dressed for dinner in the tropics, how a letter travelled from London to Sandakan, how a household ran when there were no telephones in it, how one passed an evening before there was anything to switch on. The Papers are not nostalgia, exactly. They are an attempt to look closely at a vanished way of living and to find in it the small habits, rituals, and absurdities that made it real.
Already among the correspondents? Then you need do nothing further. Your Papers are already on their way each month.
